Description

Grade 310 is an austenitic stainless steel, which offers exceptional high temperature properties, along with good ductility and weldability. Type 310 stainless steel pipes are typically used for elevated temperature applications. High chromium and nickel content of 310 grade steel pipes provides excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation, as well as superior strength in temperatures up to 2100°F. The higher chromium and nickel content, also makes it superior to 304 or 309 stainless pipes.

Heat Treatment

Annealing:

Temperature: 1040-1150°C

Process: Rapid cooling after heating to soften the material, enhance ductility, and relieve internal stresses.

Solution Treatment:

Temperature: 1040-1150°C

Process: Dissolves precipitates and restores a single-phase austenitic structure, improving corrosion resistance.

Stress Relieving:

Temperature: 200-400°C

Process: Reduces residual stresses from cold working or welding, enhancing dimensional stability and reducing the risk of stress-corrosion cracking.

Stabilizing Treatment (310S Only):

Temperature: 870-900°C

Process: Specifically for 310S, this treatment stabilizes carbon to reduce susceptibility to intergranular corrosion.

Quenching, Tempering, and Normalizing: These processes are not applicable to 310/310S stainless steel due to their austenitic structure, which does not respond to these processes.

Characteristic

Temperature Resistance: Reliable up to 1150°C.

Corrosion Resistance: Strong oxidation resistance; 310S excels with added protection.

Strength: High strength and toughness; tubing adds tensile strength.

Thermal Properties: Good conductivity and expansion; tubing adapts to temperature changes.

Surface: Pipes are robust; 310 tubing offers polished options.

Unique to 310S:

Pipe: Low carbon for better weldability.

Tubing: High purity, reducing sensitization.
